To challenge someone to prove his claim; to ask someone to complete a threat

  • This American expression is originated from the card playing in early 1800. In poker game, a player bets for what he holds despite of what others may hold in their hands. In case, if a player bluffs, he actually pretends to have a great hand of cards when in fact he doesn’t have any. The reason behind this false claim is to let them raise their bets. They “call his bluff” to meet his challenge and show the card he actually have.

Sara said, “They are skilled enough to beat us in today’s match”. Emilia replied, “O Come on Sara. Let’s call their bluff”.
