To scold a person before assigning an authority

  • This idiom refers the call to a servant to come into the carpeted parlor to be scolded by his master or madam of the house. This saying was applied to a fateful employee being called to the boss’s office to be scolded. Nowadays, when anyone senior of you scolds you, you are being “called on the carpet” without the difference of floor either carpeted or not.

My chemistry teacher called me on the carpet today. He could tell I hadn’t practiced the chemical experiments all month.
