Walk on Eggs

To proceed very cautiously, to be in precarious position, to be diplomatic for fear of upsetting someone

Etymology:

  • This idiom originated in Italy in the 16th century. The writer who first used this idiom is supposed to have imagined a person stepping very cautiously on the floor in which eggs are placed.
