Perform a task better than others
Etymology:
- In the late 19th century, the writer who introduced this phrase might have thought about two runners. One of the runners was extremely fast and efficient that it wouldn’t be difficult for him to run circles “rings”, and can go on to win the race. Today, if you’re capable of running rings around someone else then you probably are better than that person.
