Pull a Fast One

To cheat others by playing mastermind tricks

Etymology:

  • This expression is thought to have originated from the famous sports called cricket. It refers to bowl a fast ball to the batsman in order to deceive him. Later the expression reached America and became much popular. In America it was used in the game of cards or in baseball in which you face very fast balls which you do not expect coming so fast. So that fast ball acts as a trick to deceive the batsman. The idea can be carried over to life situations as well.
