Etymology:

  • This is 19th century phrase. It is thought to have originated from a famous card game called faro which was played in America. In this game of cards, the broker or dealer played trick by allowing a player to have double bet. This phrase was later used to apply in life situations in which you unfairly use two opponent groups or parties to meet ones selfish ends.
