Spontaneously, impulsive, without planning

Etymology:

  • This idiom was first used in the 19th century when the source of transportation was mainly horses. Spurs were worn which are short and spiked wheel boots for their comfort during the ride. The rider pushes the body of the horse if he wanted to go faster than usual. On the same lines, in life if a person has an opportunity to do something immediately, the expression “on the spur of the moment” can be used. Presently, the idiom is used to express the situation that the person has to act immediately.
