In Hot Water

To be in a troubling situation with someone, being embarrassed to face someone especially in charge

Etymology:

  • This expression originated in the 16th century. It suggests that if you cook something and if by chance you trickle boiling water on yourself, you will surely be in deep trouble. The phrase can also refer to the ancient custom, which suggests pouring sweltering water on intruders to shoo them away. Whatever the case may be you would try to stay away or escape any contact with hot water unless it is a warm bath.
