To liberate yourself from a repulsive or unpleasant obligation, to avoid a punishment

Etymology:

  • The expression originates from fishing. As a fish gets hooked, it badly tries to get itself off the hook. Similarly, if people find themselves in an unpleasant obligation, or get entrapped in a trouble, or they are to face any punishment, they just want to “get off the hook” by eliminating or purging them of all these unwanted worries and problems.
