  • This American idiom is originated back in the mid of 20th century. It may have come from the situation of a sloppy eater, embarrassed as he/she takes food for instance, egg on his/her face. Another origin may come from the theater where a performer acts stupid and rude audience throws raw eggs on his/her face to humiliate.
