Etymology:

This idiom has been used since last few centuries. Hatch is a way or an opening through which the passengers, cargo and crew of ship go by. In the middle of 16th century, an intelligent sailor realized that a drink going into one’s mouth like people and things pass into the ship’s hatch. So, he first used this expression.
