Swallow Hook, Line and Sinker

Etymology:

• This is a 19th century phrase which might have originated from an old British saying “to swallow a gudgeon”. What is gudgeon? It is actually a small fish like minnow that fishermen used to as bait. Normally a fish usually swallows bait but only sometimes also takes in the hook but what if it swallows the fishing line and also the lead sinker? It has surely trusted the smart fisherman so much thus gave in. Similarly to blindly trust in something is like to swallow hook, line and sinker.
