Etymology:

  • Initially it was the command to sailors who handled or crewed the guns on military boats not to leave the posts even if the boats were captured by the enemy. Later the phrase in 18th century got broadened to include anybody who was persistent or unmoved in his conviction, statement or decision. Those who “stick to their gun” are often praised for their determination and courage even if you agree with them or not.
