- The expression originated from wild oats. It was believed since 194 B.C that a wild oat s grows into a wild weed which is not of useful purpose or any good. This popular and common expression has been linked with the youth who idle away their time in indulging into some ridiculous and inane activities. It also referred to do pointless and unnecessary things when one is young.
