Pull the Wool over Your Eyes

To play trick with someone making him or her fool, to deceive or cheat someone

Etymology:

  • In Europe in 19th century, many people used to wear woolen wigs. It is to be observed that even today in most of British courts, many lawyers and judges like to wear them. If that wig is pulled from person’s eyes, he would not be able to see what is happening with him and thus could easily be misled or be fooled. The expression was used when a cunning lawyer used to dupe the judge. Now the expression simply refers to any act of cheating or deceiving someone.
