To ruin someone’s dreams, hopes or plans, to suddenly withdraw support

Etymology:

  • It is a 20th century phrase, which originated from the thought of a writer who thinks of a person standing on a piece of rug and suddenly the rug pulls out from under that person. Off course the person will get hurt while lying or falling on the floor. The same image was applied by the writer to destroy someone’s hope, dreams and expectations, or even shattering the plans related to different activities.
