To have many lovers and dates without making a single genuine commitment with one particular person

  • It is a 19th century phrase. In those days, those gamblers in a horse race who badly wanted to win the race used to bet on every horse but not on the favorite one. This thing took the shape of the expression, to “play the field”. Later the expression caught and was extended to be used in other fields and areas of life, particularly to date someone.
