Etymology:

  • The phrase is thought to have originated in the 19th century, where it is believed to have come from Afro-American dance contest. In this weird dance form which had a complex dance moves, players used to make swaggering movements with their high steps and a cake was awarded to the winner. This dance form was called a cake walk. Thus the expression “piece of cake” is nowadays used to mean something that does not require much effort which is easy and pleasant.
