Etymology:
- This expression is based on baseball which gained popularity in the United States in the 20th century. Left field is one of the positions of the player in the field. This position is very far from the home plate. Moreover, very few hits approach the player in this position. In literal terms out in the left field means that away from home. The phrase is also used to show that the person is out of his usual behavior as he behaves in home. Thus the person is thought to be out of comfort.
