On the Cuff

Etymology:

• In old days the bartenders tend to have stiff cuffs which separated the shirtsleeves. The phrase could have originated from those days. The charges of the service were often written on these cuffs by the bartenders. Thus the idiom originated to express the charges to be paid. A similar idiom but with opposite meaning is “off the cuff.”
