Something that is certain to happen, whether one likes it or not

  • The phrase originated in the 19th century. What does the word “lump” in the expression come from? Perhaps it might have come from verb that belongs to British language and dialect that is “to lump” means to resent, to be grouchy, and to be cranky and gloomy. Anything that is bound to happen, is for people either they can accept it, or they may not like it but they cannot do anything about it because it is bound to happen.

The examiner said to the late comers that they have limited time whether they like it or lump it.
