In the Bag

To be certain to get success, be sure to win or achieve something

Etymology:

  • The expression might have come from two possible origins. In British Parliament, “in the bag” meant a certain thing; a bag was placed near the speaker of the house. If any member of the parliament had any petition to be discussed, he put that in the bag, with certainty it will be worked on that day. Some also think the phrase came from hunting, when a hunter shot down any animal; he put that into his bag.
