Etymology:

  • This is a slang expression which originated in 20th century in America. It was the time when homeless people traveled from one place to another to look for any odd job, even begged for money, and they looked for a place where they can sleep and spend their night, they often used to sleep on a pile of hay in barn or fields. They were considered fast asleep when their heads “Hit the hay”. Today the expression refers to go to sleep does not matter wherever or on whatever object you sleep.
