To take charge, to order, to make the decisions
Etymology:
- This idiom is originated from the officer in charge of soldiers during war. He makes decisions, orders his soldiers and calls the shots. The role of a basketball team coach can also be referred by this idiom as he tells the players what to play and what shots to take. Nowadays, when we have to refer any person who is in authority or any type of charge, we call such activity as “calls the shots”.
