Etymology:

  • This idiom originated from the baseball game. Sport reporters wanted to know the exact figure of participants, but due to certain reasons ticket sellers never revealed the exact figures. In case, there were few attendants they gave bold claims of high attendance. These broad estimates became popular as ‘ballpark figures’. It is about giving a rough estimate of any anything and not revealing the exact figures, due to certain reasons. In modern times, this phrase is used to describe certain situation where exact figures are never revealed.
