Baker's Dozen

To get thirteen of any item, for the cost of twelve

Etymology:

  • The history of this idiom is very old. In the earlier days bakes used to make low quality loaves and used to charge the customers for the full heavy loaf. People started giving them punishment by cutting their hands. Later, a law was passed that bakers baking underweighted bread would receive severe punishments. To meet the laws and come up to the standard bakes gave 13 loaves for the price of 12 loaves. It meant that the customers got more than they asked for and the quality was improved too.
