Etymology:

  • This idiom is originated back in 15th century (Middle Ages). This actually describes that appearances and outer exposures of something or someone can be deceiving. This expression has been used in several other languages in different styles. O. Henry was the great writer of the 19th century, in his story, ‘The Gold That Glittered’, he discussed about those people who fooled by the misleading ways of making money fast.
