A phrase is defined as a group of words that occur together in sentence and does not contain the subject or the verb. Thus a phrase can never consist of one word as it is always formed by joining two or more words together.

The shortest a phrase can be is of two words but phrase is never one word.

Example:

I want two scoops of chocolate ice cream.

I want chocolate ice cream.

Two scoops of chocolate ice cream is an example of a long phrase and chocolate ice cream is an example of short phrase.

Examples of two word phrases:

Good bye

Good night

Never mind
